Frankincense – Origin and Significance

Frankincense is a medium-sized, shrub-like tree belonging to the Burseraceae family. It mainly grows in:

When the bark is injured, the tree secretes a golden-yellow to reddish resin, known as Olibanum, which serves as a natural protection for the plant.

For millennia, frankincense has been considered a precious substance. Already in antiquity, it was used in religious ceremonies – for example, it was among the gifts of the Three Wise Men, along with myrrh.

Even today, frankincense is an important component of many spiritual and ecclesiastical rituals, especially in the Catholic Church.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, frankincense has been valued for a long time. In Europe, it is now primarily known as a herbal food supplement, mostly in capsule form.

For this purpose, the gum resin of the:

Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata)
